Abstract

PhysEd-Academy is an international research project that aims to promote sustainable (international) cooperation between physical education teachers and institutions responsible for the training of physical education teachers in order to better enable teachers and future physical education teachers to teach more effectively for an active lifestyle through different teaching methods in children and youth style. The Faculty of Sports of the University of Ljubljana is one of the partners in the project.

PhysEd-Academy will address the challenges of physical education and physical education teacher training by improving the quality of programs through the transfer of knowledge and experience between physical education teacher training institutions and physical education teachers. Physical education is the only subject that can provide young people with the skills, knowledge and understanding to lead a healthy lifestyle and develop values for a lifelong commitment to an active lifestyle, paving the way to good health. Physical education led in this way can contribute to the global priority of reducing physical inactivity in the population by 15% by 2030. Currently, physical education and the indirect training of physical education teachers do not have a major impact on the healthy lifestyles of children and adolescents, as they are based on old and ineffective traditions that are far removed from current recommended practices and strategies.

Based on current research, practices and theories on the four quality factors (purpose and content of physical education, physical education teaching, teacher education and professional development) in physical education teaching and teacher education, the PhysEd-Academy project will develop and test innovative teaching strategies in educational programs and professional development programs for physical education teachers across Europe.

The partners of the PhysEd-Academy research program will test a number of newly developed pedagogical approaches (so-called Signature Pedagogies) in their teacher education and training programs, which will consequently increase the quality of these programs and also the attractiveness of the profession of physical education teacher. The PhysEd Academy aims to become a major player in the improvement of physical education and physical education teacher education, benefiting local, regional and international school physical education and teacher education programs - with the ultimate goal of improving public health.
